Korfball: Dutch for Awesome!!
This week's edition of Yes...It's A Sport. Who Knew? takes a look at korfball, or the most exciting thing to come out of the Netherlands since, well...you know. The deal with this awesomely named sport? Well it's played indoors or outdoors on a rectangular court. The court is divided into two halves, called zones. Each zone has a post with a basket mounted on top. Not like a basketball basket, like a fruit basket or something. Unfortunately the ball used in korfball isn't something crazy. It's pretty much a soccer ball with some sticky stuff on the outside. Ya. We were disappointed too. We always thought a korfball would be pink, with holes in it, and smell like cotton candy. Anyways, each team consists of four men and four women. Yes. Men and women play side by side. But, in an attempt to eliminate any potential fun or excitement, the korfball gods leveled the playing field, and outlawed contact between men and women. So, you have these magical, non-touching co-ed teams trying to korf (we're assuming that's what scoring is called), but not while being defended. It's illegal to attempt a korf while guarded, as it's in poor taste to make someone look bad. After politely korfing twice, teams change sides, and attackers become defenders. When time expires, the team with the most points....and manners is declared the winner. For more information on korfball, visit our Learn section. |
