finger jousting

The geniuses at The FindSportsNow Blog would like to introduce you to another new weekly feature. We're calling this one, "Yes...it's a sport. Who knew?" In it, we'll spotlight the rarest and most obscure of the hundreds of sports featured on FindSportsNow. This week's edition is the fast-paced, high-stakes "sport" of finger jousting!!

"So FindSportsNow, what the &*%@ is finger jousting?" Excellent question. Finger jousting, or justando dedo to our espanol-speaking hermanos is kinda how it sounds...but so, so much more! It's the art, nay, the science of out-manning and out-prodding an opponent with one's index finger. But first, a little history...

Finger jousting began in the 1970's with two young men from the suburbs, and a score that HAD to be settled. Lacking traditional dueling weaponry, the young men drew the next obvious implements - their index fingers. The confrontation was epic, with no obvious winner after several hours of jousting. Day turned to night, and night turned to day, yet their struggle continued. Finally, at the end of the first week, with their fingers nearly worn away, the young men fell simultaneously to the ground...and died (probably). Despair not though, these heroes' sacrifice was not made in vain. Their struggle now lives on in the sport known as finger jousting.

"Amazing!...I guess. Kinda weird, but that's OK. How do I play?" Well, duels begin with jousters tightly grasping each other's right hands, with arms bent in an arm wrestling position. After an intense stare down, both jousters' right index fingers are dramatically extended towards each other. At this point jousters decide the type of match to be played:

Suicide, where any touch of the body counts as a point
OR!!!
Stratego, where different parts of the body are worth different amounts of points.

Once decided, the match begins, and jousters cannot separate their hands. Any separation results in a warning, then a point deduction and finally disqualification and dismemberment. Jousters can use any technique to make contact with the opponent's body, so long as they don't use their feet or left arm as a secret weapon. Matches can be won by reaching a predetermined amount of points, having the most points at the end of three rounds or removing a limb from the opponent.

Now go out and play. But be careful, some grudges aren't worth the loss of a perfectly good index finger. For more information check out FingerJoust.com, the home of the World Finger Jousting Federation.
