Base Jumping
BASE Jumping is a sport where the participant jumps from a standing object with only a parachute. The standing object is typically a building, tower, bridge, or cliff.
Overview
Dangerous, semi-legal and sometimes deadly, BASE jumping is the sport of jumping off fixed objects and parachuting to the ground. Special parachutes and a timely get-away car are essential to survive in this most extreme sport.
Goal of BASE Jumping
To free-fall from a fixed object and safely land on the ground.
Rules of BASE Jumping
To be considered a BASE jump, the jump must originate from a fixed structure, usually at a height lower than 2000 feet. This shortened free-fall duration forces jumpers to deploy their parachute seconds after jumping. Due to the often illegal nature of BASE jumping, transportation is usually waiting to provide the jumper immediate evacuation from the landing zone.
History of BASE Jumping
Though isolated examples of BASE jumping dates back to the late 18th century, the practice of jumping off fixed objects for recreational purposes, and the term BASE were created in the United States in 1978. Standard skydiving equipment and technique were employed until the early 1980's, but were replaced by specialized equipment and techniques. The sport experienced a surge in exposure and participation during the extreme sports craze of the 1990's. Today, BASE jumping is still considered a fringe sport, mostly due to the relatively high fatality rate of competitors. Despite this, BASE jumping has a large and dedicated following, with competitions held annually in many countries throughout the world.

BASE Jumping Safety
Safety has increased due to improvements in parachute technology, yet BASE jumping remains an extremely dangerous sport that has claimed more than 100 lives in its 30 year existence.
BASE Jumping Training
BASE jumpers gain a basic knowledge of air flow, speed and aerodynamics through multiple sky dives. They also perform aerobic exercises for increased agility and flexibility.
