Baton Twirling is an individual or team sport where competitors manipulate a metal rod with the hands and body, to a coordinated routine. Individuals or teams are judged based on form and technique. History of Baton Twirling The true origin of baton twirling is unknown, though most say it began in the United States towards the end of the 17th century. For many years it was just featured in parades and other celebrations. It has since expanded to become a sport of its own. In 1947 the Drum Majorettes of America was established as the first organization solely dedicated to baton twirling competitions. Today the sport is popular around the world in countries such as Japan, France, Italy, Canada and the United States. Baton Twirling Equipment Baton Baton Twirling Safety Baton twirling is a relatively safe sport. Injury does occur, usually as a result of improperly handing the baton.
