Beach Basketball
"Nothing goes better with a pouch of Capri Sun." Beach Basketball is very similar to basketball except that it is played on a circular court with no backboard on the hoop, there is no out-of-bounds, and there is no dribbling allowed (players can pass but are limited to 2 1/2 steps). Overview Started as fun alternative to traditional basketball, beach basketball has emerged as a separate and independent entity in the sporting world. Characterized by its circular court and backboard-less goals, the sport emphasizes a fast and loose style of play, unseen in other forms of basketball. Goal of Beach Basketball Score more points than the opposing team, within the allotted amount of time. Rules of Beach Basketball Played on a circular, sand, court, teams alternate shooting and defending a backboard-less goal. Baskets made within the inner circle are worth 2 points, while baskets made from beyond the circle are worth 3 points. The sand playing surface doesn't allow for dribbling, so players can advance the ball 2.5 steps before passing off to a teammate. No out-of-bounds call create more continuous action, while limited foul calls create a more physical form of play. History of Beach Basketball Beach basketball was created as a physical education sport in 1970's Alabama. It quickly grew in popularity due to its low equipment demands and loose set of rules. In the early 1990's the World Beach Basketball Association was formed to develop grassroots interest and govern existing groups and leagues. The first world championship was held in Alabama a few years later. Today the sport is played in dozens of countries, and is considered the fastest growing beach sport in the world. Beach Basketball Equipment Basketball Goal Sand Beach Basketball Safety As is the case with any physical game, injuries are unpredictable. These can range from the minor (cuts and bruises) to the major (torn ligaments and broken bones). Playing on sand also adds a great amount of stress to the hamstrings and Achilles' tendons. Beach Basketball Training Various aerobic exercises can be performed to improve endurance and agility, while weight training can build strong arms, shoulders and legs. Players also practice shooting at the goal to develop rhythm and muscle memory.
