Rules of Belly Dancing
Basic techniques involve circular motions isolated to a certain part of the body. Most common are hip circles and chest circles. Accents such as lifts and drops of the hips are incorporated to draw the eye towards the mid-section. Shoulder and arm movements are used to accent chest and belly undulations. Silk or chiffon veils and scarves are added for dramatic effect.
History of Belly Dancing
The exact origins of belly dancing are debatable. Many different theories exist, yet all seem to claim the practice was created in the eastern Mediterranean or Middle East. It was practiced for hundreds of years at many different social occasions, including birth rituals, religious ceremonies and folk festivals. Westerners adopted belly dancing in the 18th and 19th centuries. Today belly dancing is popular all around the world, and can be seen everywhere from restaurants to nightclubs.
