"Throwing sharp metal objects...the best thing to do when drunk!"  Darts is an individual or team game where sharp objects, or darts, are thrown at a circular target. Many different games with varying rules and goals can be played using the same basic techniques and equipment. Overview Darts is the sport of throwing pointy little weapons at a circular target. Players or teams throw up to three darts, standing at a distance of about 8 feet. Each area of the target is worth a different amount of points, with the center worth the most. Goal of Darts Accurately throw darts at the dartboard, according to the rules of the game being played. Rules of Darts Most regulation dartboards are 18 inches in diameter, and made of sisal fibers. Standard games call for the dartboard to be hung so the bull's-eye is 5 feet, 8 inches above the ground. The oche is marked 7 feet, 9 inches away from the face of the dartboard. The dartboard is divided into 20 sections, each separated with metal wire. Sections are valued from 1 to 20 points. Circular wires divide each section into single, double and triple areas. Games usually consist of two players or teams taking turns throwing up to three darts. History of Darts Darts originated with English soldiers throwing short arrows at the bottom of casks or tree trunks. Looking to take advantage of the game's popularity, bars and taverns started attracting patrons by placing dartboards inside their establishments. The numbering plan used on today's dartboards was devised in 1896 as way to standardize the game's rules. In 1973, the British Darts Organization was founded. It remains today the largest professional darts organization in the world.
