"Why be chilly? Play floorball!"
Floorball
Floorball is an indoor team sport similar to hockey, where teams of six use plastic sticks to put a plastic ball in the opposing team's goal.
Overview
Let's play Swedish indoor soccer/hockey! But, let's call it by its proper name - floorball! Featuring two teams wielding hockey sticks, floorball is an immensely popular sport across Europe that marries elements of two popular games. Played on indoor rinks, floorball games consist of three 20 minute periods.
Goal of Floorball
Score more goals than the opposing team.
Rules of Floorball
Floorball is played on a rink that varies in size from 18-22 meters wide to 36-44 meters long. Six players from each team are allowed on the court at the same time. Official games consist of three periods of 20 minutes. Players are not allowed to check, but can push an opposing player to gain a positioning advantage. The team with the most goals at the end of the game is the winner.
History of Floorball
Floorball was first played in Sweden in the early 1970's. By the late 1970's floorball had spread across continental Europe. In the 1980's, associations and leagues were established in a number of countries. In 1986, the International Floorball Federation (IFF) was established to govern all international competition, which is currently dominated by Sweden, Finland, Switzerland and the Czech Republic. The IFF recently applied for floorball to be included in the Olympic Games, with an eye on introducing the sport in 2020.
