Freestyle Frisbee
"Extreme!!!"
Freestyle Frisbee is a disc sport where players toss a disc back and forth using fast-paced and difficult to perform throws and catches. This is made possible by using an extremely light disc. Overview Freestyle Frisbee combines aspects of gymnastics and dance with the basic game of throw and catch. Teams of two or three perform a wide variety of trick throws and catches while tossing a flying disc. Routines are judged on different criteria, and points are awarded. The team with the highest amount of points at the competition is the winner. Goal of Freestyle Frisbee Perform creative, artistic and athletic moves with flying discs. Rules of Freestyle Frisbee Teams of two or three players perform tricks while throwing a disc back and forth. Nine judges evaluate routines as they're performed. Three judges each evaluate the categories of artistic impression, difficulty and execution. Each category is worth a maximum of ten points. The team with the highest score at the end of competition is the winner. History of Freestyle Frisbee Though many different stories exist that detail the origin of flying discs, the most commonly told story is that of the Frisbie Pie Company. According to legend, in the late 19th century the Frisbie Pie Company made pies that were sold to colleges across New England. Once finished, students would toss the empty pie tins around campus for sport and leisure. This practice caught on, and eventually led to the creation of plastic discs made specifically for throwing. Walter Frederick Morrison was a leading innovator, creating the Frisbee in 1948. The first formalized games using flying discs began in the 1960's and 1970's. The first freestyle Frisbee tournament was held in 1974. The sport continued to grow throughout the 1980's and 1990's, helped along by the rise of the extreme sports craze. Freestyle Frisbee Equipment Flying Discs Freestyle Frisbee Safety Freestyle Frisbee is a relatively safe sport. Minor ankle and knee injuries can occur due to constant twisting and jumping. Injury can also occur when discs come into contact with a player's eyes and face. Freestyle Frisbee Training In addition to being a highly proficient disc thrower, one must have exceptional agility and hand-eye coordination. These skills can be obtained through flexibility-building activities like aerobics and yoga, and through various disc-throwing drills.
