Gaelic Handball
Gaelic Handball is a form of handball similar to American handball, where individuals or two-person teams use their hands to hit a small rubber ball around a four-walled court.
Overview
Gaelic handball is a fast-paced sport where players knock a ball around a walled court. Using just a gloved hand, players attempt to score points by forcing the ball to bounce on the ground twice before an opponent can return it. It is one of the four Gaelic Athletic Association sports, and is widely played in Ireland.
Goal of Gaelic Handball
Score points by hitting a ball around a walled-court, and ultimately win games and a match.
Rules of Gaelic Handball
Gaelic handball is played on a 40-foot long by 20-foot wide court, with a 20-foot tall front wall. Most games are played on a four-walled court, but variations of the game are commonly played on three-walled and one-walled courts. Play starts with one player serving the ball to the other. The serving player has two chances to hit the ball from the service area, off the front wall and across the service line. Points can only be scored by the serving player. Players must hit the ball off the front wall before the ball bounces twice. The first player to reach the pre-determined amount of points wins the game, while the first player to win the pre-determined amount of games wins the match.
History of Gaelic Handball
Evidence has been found of handball-like games played in ancient Egypt and pre-Columbian Central and South America. Modern handball originated in Ireland and Scotland, first being played sometime in the 15th or 16th century. Today Gaelic handball is one of four games organized by the Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA), and remains quite popular in Ireland.

Gaelic Handball Safety
The ball used in Gaelic handball is small and travels at a high rate of speed. This can cause injuries, usually exclusive to the eyes and face.
Gaelic Handball Training
Gaelic handball requires great agility and hand-eye coordination. These can be attained by aerobic exercise and practice playing other ball and wall sports like racquetball.
