Homerun Derby
Homerun Derby is a competition where players attempt to hit the most home runs. It is setup in a traditional playoff system where the players with the most home runs advance to the next round.
Overview
The intricacies of the national pastime are cast aside in baseball's answer to the shootout. Individuals battle to go deep most often, as power and distance are pushed to the forefront. Anything but a home run is considered an out, with the player that goes yard the most declared the winner.
Goal of Homerun Derby
To hit as many home runs as possible.
Rules of Homerun Derby
Major League rules stipulate no more than 6-8 players compete in a traditional playoff system, where the players with the most home runs advance to the next round. Each player is given 10 outs per round, with no limit on the amount of home runs that can be hit. If a tie exists at the end of any round, 5 swings are given to each of the tied players. The 2 players with the most home runs at the end of the second round compete in a final round. The winner of the final round is declared the winner of the derby.
History of Homerun Derby
Though home run hitting contests have existed nearly as long as baseball itself, the first official derby (as sanctioned by Major League Baseball) occurred prior to the 1985 All-Star Game. Over the years official derby rules have undergone multiple, yet slight changes, including changes in the number of participants and adjustments to the number of outs given. Today, home run derbies are held in several professional and amateur leagues throughout the world, with Major League Baseball's still held annually, prior to the All-Star Game.
