Indoor Volleyball
"Bump! Set! Spike!"
Indoor Volleyball, or Volleyball is a team sport where players volley a ball with their hands over a large net. If the ball hits the ground or lands out of bounds, a point is scored by the opposing team. The team that reaches the pre-determined amount of points first, is the winner. Overview Indoor volleyball began as less physical alternative to basketball. Today it's popular around the world, and played in the Summer Olympic Games. Games consist of two teams attempting to ground the ball on the opponents' court. The first team to score 25 points wins a set, and the first team to win three sets wins the match. Rules of Indoor Volleyball Points are scored when a team is unable to return the ball or the ball lands out of bounds. The first team to reach 25 points wins the set, and the first team to win three sets wins the match. Teams consist of six active players that can hit the ball a maximum of three times before sending it to the other side of the court. Play must be started by a service, which occurs by tossing the ball in the air and hitting it with an open hand, from behind the back line of the court. History of Indoor Volleyball Volleyball was invented in 1895 as a less physical alternative to basketball for older people who wanted to keep active. By 1916, with the sport spreading across the United States, formalized rules were established. Skill and power moves like sets and spikes were introduced into the game shortly afterwards. Volleyball became an international sport when American soldiers brought volleyballs to Europe in World War I. By mid-century, an international organization had been established, world championships were held and the sport had been accepted into the Olympics. Today volleyball is an extremely popular game, played throughout the world.
