Kayaking
"Kayaking: The loner's answer to canoeing."
Kayaking is the act of moving in a body of water, in a narrow, keelless boat with pointed ends and a closed cockpit. The kayak is propelled by one, double-sided paddle. Overview Kayaking has been practiced for centuries, as a way to quickly and easily move through water. Using a canoe-like craft with a closed top, a single person uses a double-sided paddle for propulsion. Today it is primarily a recreational practice, and sometimes a competitive activity. Rules of Kayaking Kayaking is a primarily recreational sport, and as such few rules and regulations. Rules may exist in competitions, but are created at the discretion of the competition's organizing body, and may vary. Rules may also exist, which limit areas that can be kayaked. History of Kayaking Kayaks have been used throughout human history because of the ease in which they're constructed and then maneuvered. Native tribes of the sub-Arctic regions of Asia and North America would stretch animal skins over wooden frames to create kayaks used for hunting on inland lakes, rivers and coastal waters. European explorers adopted the practice and used it around the world. Today, kayaks are generally made out of lightweight plastic. Kayaking Equipment Kayak Paddle Personal Flotation Device Kayaking Safety The safety level of kayaking is directly influenced by the water being kayaked in. Participants should always check conditions prior to setting out, and never kayak in waters beyond their skill level. Kayaking Training Kayakers should possess strong arms and shoulders, capable of moving in a circular motion for extended periods of time. Kayakers should also be strong swimmers. These should be coupled with a working knowledge of canoeing and water safety basics.
