Metal Detecting is where participants use metal detectors to find metallic objects. It is done for both recreation and sport. Overview Metal detectors were first introduced at the end of the 19th century. After World War II, a hobby was created around using metal detectors to find hidden objects in the ground. Today technology has greatly improved, allowing for much smaller and better-hidden objects to be discovered. Goal of Metal Detecting (Treasure Hunting) Use a metal detection device to search for and discover hidden objects in the ground. Rules of Metal Detecting (Treasure Hunting) One should always seek permission from the owner of the land which is being searched. Some public lands may require permits from local officials. Rules and restrictions regulating the reporting and documenting of found items vary. One should always review these rules (if any) prior to searching. This has allowed for even the most novice individual to excel at metal detection.
