Run Archery
"A better combo than Oreos and milk." Run Archery combines cross-country running with archery. Overview Originally conceived as a summer alternative to ski archery, run archery combines the speed and endurance elements of a track and field event, with the precision and discipline of target archery. In competition, participants run a pre-determined distance before firing a series of arrows at targets. The participants' accuracy determines the remaining distance required to complete the race. Goal of Run Archery To complete the course in the quickest amount of time possible. Rules of Run Archery After running a 1000 meter course, the competitor enters the shooting area where he/she can shoot three arrows at a series of four targets, from a distance of twenty meters. Each of the targets if a different size, and carries a different point value. A competitor's cumulative score at the end of the shooting portion determines the length of the remainder of the course, with a higher score producing a shorter route. History of Run Archery Archery, dating back to the Paleolithic era was/is practiced by many cultured throughout the world. As civilization progressed, archery evolved from a method of hunting animals, into a useful tool of warfare. When guns became prevalent in the early 17th century the practice of archery became nearly nonexistent, only being used by societies where guns weren't yet available. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries archery was revived as a sporting venture in Europe and North America. Run archery, in existence for a mere 25 to 30 years, is governed by the International Archery Federation (FITA). It has quickly amassed a large and dedicated following throughout much of the western world.
