Unicycling
"Who needs two??"
Unicycling is a type of cycling where riders use pedals to propel a single wheel. Overview A unicycle is a man-powered vehicle resembling a bicycle except that it only has one wheel. There are several types of unicycles including tall, freestyle, trial, and seat-less unicycles. Because pedals are connected directly to the axle there are no gears, thus, speed is determined by the size of the wheel. Goal of Unicycling The goal of unicycling is to ride a unicycle without falling. Goals are also dependent on the unicycling activity. History of Unicycling Theories on the origin of the unicycle are connected, not surprisingly, to the development of the bicycle. One popular theory ties the unicycle to the penny-farthing, a style of bicycle with a large front wheel and smaller back wheel. The penny-farthings had their pedals connected directly to the front axle so that when riders began to pedal the rear wheel would rise up in the air slightly and the riders moved forward. Owners found that they could disconnect the rear wheel altogether and still be able to ride. In the 1980s, unicycling enthusiasts created different types of unicycles, and also started off-road unicycling. Unicycling Equipment Protective Equipment Unicycle Unicycling Safety Riders should always wear a helmet and protective gear in order to prevent injury in case of a fall. Unicycling Training Because unicycles lack a stabilizing back wheel, beginning unicyclers must learn to balance properly. Also, because there are no handlebars, riders must learn to use their body to steer the unicycle in the direction they desire, while at the same time maintaining balance and control.
