Water Polo
"Play water polo, wear a sweet swim cap."
Water Polo
Water Polo is a form of polo played in a swimming pool. Players advance a ball across a pool with the intention of throwing it into the opposing team's goal.
Overview
Water polo is a team game played with six position players and one goalkeeper per team. The team with possession of the ball attacks the opposing team's goal to try to score. Play is continuous unless a goal is scored or a penalty is committed.

Goal of Water Polo
The goal of water polo is to score more points than the opposing team at the end of regulation.
Rules of Water Polo
At the start of play, both teams line up along their own goal and sprint to the middle of the pool at the referees whistle in order to gain control of the ball. The attacking team then attempts to score on the opposing team's goal and maintains control until they score or turn the ball over. Once a goal is scored, teams line up on their own half of the pool and the team who did not score the previous goal gets possession; play begins when that team puts the ball in play by passing to a teammate.
History of Water Polo
Water polo originated in the late 19th century as a form of rugby played in rivers and lakes in England and Scotland with a ball made of Indian rubber. The name polo is derived from the Balti word for ball, pulu. In 1900, water polo was included in the Olympic Games becoming the first team sport to be included in the event.

Water Polo Training
Water polo is a sport that requires participants to be able to swim. Players must constantly swim from one end of the pool to the other throughout the game, so good swimming ability is necessary. Players must also be able to tread water. Since rules state that players can only have one hand on the ball, they must be able to catch and throw with either hand.
